UK Home Improvers Ready to Spend This Summer
Spend on home improvements is set to rocket to an eye-watering £60 billion as homeowners begin to put DIY dreams into action following the easing of COVID-19 restrictions.
But are British firms ready to meet demand? Government guidelines setting out how tradespeople should work in residential settings were released a week ago. Simon Young, General Manager at UK manufacturer Phantom Screens says: “Demand for our screens is still high despite the restrictions we’ve been facing - we’ve had to ask people to bear with us while we waited for the new guidance. Now it’s here, our customers are chomping at the bit to get their screens installed in time for summer.”
For many businesses however, getting professional trade teams back to work isn’t necessarily a quick and simple task. New working procedures mean changes to long-held operating practices, while others are simple to adopt. Young again: “The biggest change for our teams will be the use of multiple vehicles to allow fitters to travel to residential settings separately. After that, it’s all about training and communication with our staff and of course our customers, setting out clearly and precisely how we will work - safely - in their homes.
“We’re a relatively small business which means we can move quickly to get people back in place and ready to go” says Young, “We’re excited to be getting back to work though, and of course helping people create better homes with our solar and insect screens.”
Homeowners like Jo Foster from Market Deeping in Lincolnshire are managing the anxiety of having strangers working in her home, she says: “I’m reassured to see companies sending me a list of procedures in advance of their visit - things like keeping doors open, mask and glove wearing; even detail on conducting a conversation 2m apart side-to-side rather than face-to-face. If everyone is this sensible, I can’t see any reason why we can’t all get the work we want done in our homes this summer.”
The spending research by Checkatrade was punctuated by a postscript noting that with money tighter for many homeowners now, spending wisely on properly qualified and well-prepared tradespeople will become more important than ever in what is likely to become the ‘new normal’ in ways of working for the home improvement sector.
