Encore Caregivers, a family-owned Houston in-home care agency, has released a guide to long-term care insurance for home care. It covers how eligibility is certified, how elimination and benefit periods work, and why Medicare rarely pays for ongoing help at home.
-- HOUSTON, TX — Encore Caregivers, a family-owned in-home care agency in Houston, has published a guide explaining how long-term care insurance works when an older adult needs help at home. The guide covers the terms that confuse families most, what has to happen before a policy starts paying, and why the coverage matters for people who want to age in place. It is available at https://encorecaregivers.com/understanding-the-basics-of-long-term-care-insurance-for-home-care/
Many families assume regular health insurance or Medicare will cover a caregiver once a parent can no longer manage alone. In most cases it won’t. Those plans focus on medical treatment, while long-term care insurance is built for ongoing help with daily life, much of which happens outside a hospital. Life insurance, by comparison, pays out only after death.
The need is widespread. According to the U.S. Administration for Community Living, a person turning 65 today has almost a 70% chance of needing some type of long-term care services in the years ahead. For families with a policy, knowing how it works can mean the difference between using benefits early and paying out of pocket for months.
Encore’s guide starts with eligibility. Most policies begin paying only after a doctor certifies one of two things: a cognitive impairment, such as dementia, or a need for help with at least two activities of daily living. Those activities are basic self-care tasks like bathing, dressing, eating and using the toilet.
Certification doesn’t mean benefits start right away. Policies include an elimination period, a waiting stretch that works much like a deductible and usually runs 30 to 90 days. A longer wait generally comes with a lower premium, but the family covers care costs during that window.
The guide also explains two other terms that shape how far a policy goes. The benefit period sets how long payments last, commonly two, three or five years, and some policies pay for life. Inflation protection raises coverage over time so benefits keep up with the rising cost of care. Families who hold more than one policy may be able to use them at the same time.
Policyholders often want coverage for help at home. The agency’s in-home services, from personal care to dementia support, are listed at https://encorecaregivers.com/home-care-services/
Encore Caregivers was founded by Nora Aden, a registered nurse, and Mike Aden, a CPA. The couple’s work in Houston home care dates to 1996, and the agency today has more than 130 caregivers trained and supervised by a registered nurse. The company accepts long-term care insurance alongside private pay. Its history and awards, including Home Care Pulse’s recognition as a Top 100 caregiving agency in 2023, are outlined at https://encorecaregivers.com/about-caregiver-agency/
In a testimonial, Encore client Holly Hart described the agency’s work as “outstanding care and compassion.”
The insurance guide is part of a series of educational resources Encore Caregivers publishes for Houston families. Earlier guides have compared in-home care with nursing homes and assisted living. The agency also helps families understand their long-term care insurance benefits before care starts.
