Predictive maintenance was challenging to implement in the last decade because of the cost of sensors and the low quality of data analytics tools. It was hard for firms to really get a handle on the degree to which moving parts were degrading over time.
Now, though, technology is improving, and vibration sensing is far better than ever before, particularly on rotating equipment. Sensing technology is able to detect whether systems have loose mountings, worn bearings, or misalignment due to the way the machines vibrate. It is then able to generate data that uses statistical analysis to determine when the next maintenance session is due.
Renke provides vibration sensors that operate across multiple axes in the X, Y, and Z directions. They also carry MEMS temperature sensing, giving operators a sense of how warm the machine is running and how much it's shaking.
Renke offers various products that cover a range of frequencies, from 10 Hz up to 12,000 Hz. Models can also work in an extreme temperature range, from -40°C to +80°C, with high-temperature models going as high as +150°C. The firm achieves this by using 304 stainless steel with an IP67 rating. There is a wired version of the sensor that runs on 10 to 30 V DC and is capable of transmitting data up to 2 km. There's also a wireless, battery-powered version for instances where attaching cables to machines is challenging. Finally, there's an analog version that operates in the 4 to 20 mA range and has 0 to 5 V or 0 to 10 V connection outputs.
